Welcome to Odd Season Two
Where we mature as a business and team, focusing on what we know - and love.
If you’re new here, welcome. If you already know us, thank you for sticking around. I want to start 2024 by telling you about our upcoming changes and what you can expect from our team this year.
First, a quick recap to refresh our memories and an intro for those who don’t know us. If you’re only here for the gossip, skip for part 2.
Previously, on Season One of Odd Data & Design Studio
I’m Letícia, CEO of Odd. I’m Brazilian, but I've been living in Barcelona since 2020. I founded the company in 2019 with
and and the dream of bringing design and data closer. Odd started by combining our interdisciplinary knowledge (business, technology, and design) to shift how Brazilian, Indian, and African researchers communicated their results. Our goal was to push scientific communication creatively and technologically. By working closely with them, we could create new and innovative ways to reach stakeholders, policymakers, health professionals, and the population.For four years, we supported and trained +500 researchers to think like us and to design and develop solutions that could, among many other things:
Inform pregnant women there is no exact date for a baby to be born;
Support health technicians prioritize which maternities to implement breastfeeding initiatives; or
Change how to visualize and track gestational weight gain.
The list goes on, and I can proudly say we continue to impact millions of people's health and lives.
Although we learned a lot (documented in this white paper), we felt that not all projects needed the creative push we expected. We constantly battled between function and craziness, technological explorations and Excel sheets, tailor-made design, and pre-set guidelines. Some of us (including myself) even missed focusing solely on data visualization.
When expanding our operation, it was clear that we were distinctive business units competing to get the job done. Sometimes even getting in our way. With so many elements involved, it became harder to follow a process and for potential clients to understand us. This led us to question how to balance different yet complementary interests and bring clarity to what we have to offer.
Welcome Season Two: dividing to conquer collaborate with talented people
If you’re here for the gossip, season 2 is not about a breakup but about maturing as a company. Odd is a global studio that reimagines how people perceive, consume, and interact with data. But since last year, our teams have tackled that challenge with different focuses, covering more ground and supporting our clients in distinctive ways. Now, we are divided into three units, as follows:
Units work together when projects demand but are free to explore other collaborations.
Odd Information Design Studio: reimagining data and concepts to support decision-making, data comprehension, and exploration for organizations, connecting your audience to your data.
If you:
wish to design stunning data presentations;
want to visualize your data to inspire, inform, explore, or support decision-making;
want to analyze and tell stories with your data;
need to transform your brand guidelines into dataviz guidelines;
want to explore and interact with your data;
have a lot of data but doesn’t know where to start;
There is no small or big task our team won’t graciously handle. We are experts in making your data look its best for reports, presentations, scrolly-telling websites, dashboards, and tailor-made data solutions. We have everything in-house - from data analysts and storytellers to developers.
Plus, we have a team dedicated to supporting researchers - Odd Information Design for Researchers has a team composed of researchers who have transitioned into DataViz. And they are committed to changing scientific communication.
And our own design and prototype lab, which is now open to everyone else.
Odd Design & Experiments: crazy experimental makers who wish to prototype with data creatively, bridging the gap between imagination and reality.
If you are:
An artist or design team that can think of incredible dataviz ideas but could use some help coding or scaling;
A creative or dataviz studio and have been commissioned to do an installation or creative project that involves data;
Someone with a crazy idea that involves a new (or old) tech but doesn’t know where to start to make it work;
This team has your back. This is our SWAT design and tech team in data; there is no reason to keep them to ourselves. We have been working with white-label projects that we can’t even mention being a part of. And that is okay because we want to see your crazy ideas come to life. They tackle all crazy things that combine data: AR/VR, phygital, bouncing like crazy, anti-UX/UI. You name it.
For example, we have recently designed a tool with a well-known data artist, transforming behavioral data from a company’s clients to deliver personalized data art at their door. That’s about what I can say, but the client and the artist are pleased, and so are we :)
Here, you can see a few of last year's open projects and explorations.
Lastly, we have started sharing what we learned with Odd Education & Content. But this post is too long, and you don't need to hear about our upcoming Podcast right now—maybe next time.
Units collaborate on projects whenever needed. But most importantly, this gives us space to grow and mature as a company, supporting clients and partners to reimagine data the best way we know - and love.
I am excited about 2024 and looking forward to sharing all our ideas and news with you every other week. Thank you for subscribing, and if you see us collaborating at some point, my calendar is always open.
I hope we have a kind - and full of data to visualize and explore - in 2024.
